Arroyo Seco Watershed Study Announced

March 25, 2000 -- The Arroyo Seco Foundation has formed a partnership with North East Trees, a community based tree-planting organization from Northeast Los Angeles, to propose a comprehensive watershed study for the Arroyo Seco, a major tributary of the Los Angeles River. This project, the Arroyo Seco Watershed Restoration Feasibility Study, will ensure that a coordinated and thorough approach is taken to restore and enhance the Arroyo Seco for flood management, habitat rehabilitation, water quality and recreation.

The Arroyo Seco is one of Southern California’s greatest natural treasures. It is so impressive that Teddy Roosevelt once proclaimed that it should be made a national park. It encompasses eleven miles of steep, erosion-prone mountain watershed that empties into an alluvial canyon and plain traveling through eleven miles of diverse urban neighborhoods to meet the Los Angeles River by Elysian Park and Dodger Stadium. The Arroyo Seco contains landmarks that have made our region world renown, most notably Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the Rose Bowl. These are the majestic purple mountains that millions around the world view each New Year’s Day during the Rose Bowl game. While there have been significant impacts since the days of Teddy Roosevelt that have harmed the natural values of the Arroyo Seco, it still retains much of its charm and popularity.

In recent years, driven by tremendous community support, there have been notable efforts to enhance and restore the Arroyo Seco. In the northern part of the Arroyo, the City of Pasadena and the Arroyo Seco Foundation have led these efforts. In the southern part, North East Trees has spearheaded the campaign. That’s why we are pleased to join with North East Trees in this joint venture. Finally the common planning issues that affect the Arroyo Seco can be addressed in a comprehensive manner. Finally we will be able to develop a management and coordination tool for all the agencies and stakeholders that care for and enjoy the Arroyo.

The Arroyo Seco Watershed Restoration Feasibility Study is most timely and has broad support. We are working closely with the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the California Coastal Conservancy, which will provide funding and technical support for the watershed study.  We expect a confirmation of funding by the end of April.
